The infamous hacker group, Anonymous, proclaims that anyone can join, even non-tech savvy folks. Well, the same rule applies here. You don’t have to code to be a “hacker” in Salesforce. Unlike Anonymous, however, you also do not need to disassociate yourself from your hack-tivities. We’re not doing anything illegal here. No one will call your parole officer.

Some would-be hackers out there have caught some of the hack-tion but missed some webinars, blogs, or the session, so I thought it might be helpful to wrangle up the top 13 hacks and tricks and put them all in one place. 1. Welcome Email Workflow

This hack sends an introduction email to new users with specific information on getting started with Salesforce. To do it, use workflow to email the user a pre-defined template when creating the user record.

2. Report on Record-less Users

Report on users without Opportunities (or other things). To do it, create a Custom Report Type on Users with or without Opportunities along with the “Power of 1″ custom formula field.

3. Report on Records Created by Running User

Want to create one report that can be used by anyone to see the records they created? Make sure the formula field that leverages $User.Id has the variable: IF(CreatedById = $User.Id, 1,NULL).

4. Automated Temporary Access

Set an “Access Expiration” date on a user, and have them automatically deactivated on that date. Tie the Custom Field to the Time Based Workflow like this: Custom Field + Time Based Workflow.

5. Sales Cycle Morphing Page Layouts

Have your Page Layouts change as the Users progress an Opportunity through the Sales Cycle (i.e. when they change the Stage).

6. Case Comment Tracking Fields

This hack lets you store important dates such as “First Comment Date” and “Last Comment Date.” To do it, create a workflow on the “Case Comment” (and “Email Message”) objects.

7. Case Neglect Flag

Here’s how you set an image field to flag cases that have sat without a comment for too long. Make sure you check out number 5 above before you click into this one.

8. Case Re-Open Count

Want to track how many times a Case has been reopened by the customer? This helps track service team efficiency, for example, a service manager wants to track the average amount of times cases are reopened.

Here’s how to give service agents an easy way to take ownership of a Case with one click.

10. Email to a Friend Objective

Want to email an account link without copying and pasting from the browser? Let’s say a user calls and says something is wrong with an Account. Instead of asking for the link or ID, they simply click a button that opens a new email window with the Account link populated.

11. Record Type Switch in One Click

Here’s how to change the record type of an Account without having to go through all the manual steps, such as if a Partner record type needs to be changed to a Customer record type.

12. Auto-number Switcharoo

Did you know you can change the data stored in an Auto-number field to whatever you want? You can! This trick comes in handy especially during data migrations.
